Just like you and me, plants need light to survive. If natural light is not available, we need to create an artificial light environment by simply using fluorescent light or grow light bulbs.
When installing light fixtures, keep in mind that the space or part of it should be bright enough, so you can comfortably read a book there.

You can simply test if it's brightened by pretending to be a plant.
You can stand or sit in the spot under the light and see, is it bright enough? Can you read a book?
If not, you might have to lower the light fixtures and bring them closer to the plants or install more light fixtures to get the desired results.
How long should you keep the lights on? At least eight to 10 hours a day, best 12 to 16 hours a day. Do not keep the lights on for 24 hours.

Plants like us, need a break and a good night's sleep. Make it easy for yourself. Install light switch timer, so you don't have to run back and forth or forget to turn the light on and off.
Weak stems, loss of leaf color vibrance, a good indication that more light exposure is necessary.
So plants will tell you if they need more light. What type of plans are suitable for artificial light situation?
Artificially lit spaces fall into the low light category. So you need to choose a plant that can adapt and be happy in this kind of environment.
I will share with you my top seven plants I have used for the artificial light settings. First one is Aglaonema.
I love its round shape. There is a lot of varieties of aglaonema plant. Choose a variety that has a much darker leaves.

They adapt in low light environment much better. Snake plant. The easiest of them all. Very low watering frequency and very hardy. Like aglaonema, darker leaf variety tolerates lower light better.
Zee Zee plant. Just like snake plant, it's a very low watering frequency plant and very hardy.
I love the look of this plant and how naturally glossy the leaves are. Peace Lily. Such an elegant plant, right?
Keep in mind guys that it might not bloom as much in a low light environment, but I like this plant even without blooms for its beautiful shape and gorgeous leaves. Dracaena Lisa.

I use this plant a lot in offices in New York city. It's very easy to care for and very hardy. Here are two plants that I love for their cascading habits; Pothos plant and Philodendron plant.
Both plants are very hardy, easy to care for and perfect for decorating shelves. By the way, all these plants are also powerful air purifiers.
Remember the watering frequency is much lower for plants in artificial light situation. Now, you know.
